Document Summary

We associate two stimuli and respond the same way to both. Involved the association of events in the environment. You have come to associate the sight of lightening with the sound of thunder. Discovered by ivan pavlov, called classical conditioning b/c it was the first systematic study of the basic laws of learning. Natural reflex: present at birth, not learned (pupil contracts in response to bright light) Pavlov was interested in the salivary reflex, mouthwatering at sight or sound or thought of food. Conducted research on salivary reflex with dogs, and noticed after a while dogs salivated even when food was absent. They began to salivate when lab assistants arrived or heard noises such as approaching footsteps. Psychic secretions were evidence that dogs had learned to associate lab assistants with food. A behavioural response in anticipation, physiological but also psychological as learning originated in cerebral cortex.
