Document Summary

May be unable to to remember old info they knew very well. Such change in memory lacks a physical cause. Part of a person"s cognition of experience is no longer consciously accessible. Aspect of memory is dissociated, or separated from the rest. 3 major dissociative disorders: dissociative amnesia, depersonalization/derealization disorder, dissociative identity disorder. Unable to recall important info usually of upsetting nature about their lives. Loss of memory is much more extensive than normal forgetting. Characterized by sudden onset of an episode with equally rapid disappearance. Generally focused on particular aspect of traumatic experience rather than an entire period of time surrounding the event. Ex: person unable to recall death of child but can recall other events that happened during that time. People forget personal identities and details of their lives but may also flee to an entirely different location. Some travel a short distance and make a few social contacts in new setting.
