Theophrastus wrote about different characters to try to describe individual differences. Personality trait a durable disposition to behave in a particular way in a variety of situations: honest, dependable, moody, impulsive, suspicious, anxious, excitable, domineering, friendly. One basic trait may cause other traits: basic trait, excitable, therefore, person becomes impulsive, restless, irritable. Personality can be described completely by measuring only 16 traits. Neuroticism: anxious, hostile, self-conscious, insecure, vulnerable, overreact to stress, impulsiveness, emotional instability. Openness to experience: curiosity, flexibility, vivid fantasy, imaginativeness, artistic, unconventional attitudes, less need for closure, less prejudice. Agreeableness: sympathetic, trusting, cooperative, modest, straightforward, constructive approaches to conflict, less quarrelsome, empathy, helping, opposite: suspicious, antagonistic, aggressive.
