Document Summary

People conform to the behaviours and opinions of others. Especially when those behaviours and opinions reflect a majority position. Society is filled with rules about how everyone is supposed to act. Not taught to face the front of an elevator but we still don"t have our backs to the doors. We also classify norms as descriptive or injuctive: Agreed on expectations about what members of a group do. Not littering in a museum (no one does it) Agreed on expectations about what members of a group ought to do. People more likely to abide by injuctive norms if norms are called to their attentions. Social role is a set of norms ascribed to a person"s social position. Expectations and duties associated with individual"s position in the family, at work, in community, and other settings. Role of police = maintain law and order. Role of parents = to nurture, rear, and treach children, prepare them.
