Rarely instituted with specific alternative sources of reinforcement set up. Punishment may be only source of attention for someone, making it discriminative stimulus for positive reinforcement. Punishing someone in an act of anger and frustration is a form of abuse, not systematic training. Corporal punishment associated with aggression, mental health issues, antisocial behaviour etc. An avoidance response is made and prevents the delivery of an aversive stimulus. Source of motivation for instrumental behaviour caused by the presentation of a stimulus that was previously conditioned with a primary or unconditioned reinforcer.
