Document Summary

Thorndike and skinner concluded punishment was not an effective method for controlling behaviour and had only temporary effects. With appropriate punishment procedure, responding can be totall suppressed fast however if punishment is misapplied, the suppression of behaviour may be incomplete/ responding may recover. An aversive stimulus is presented after a target instrumental response. Bc punishment involves suppression of behaviour, it can be observed only with responses that are likely to occur in the first place. Lab studies of punishment usually begin with preliminary phase in which target response is first established with positive reinforcement. Punishment procedure is then superimposed on the schedule of positive reinforcement which sets up conflict between responding to obtain positive reinforcement and witholding the response to avoid punishment. Characteristics of the aversive stimulus and its method of introduction. Time out is the removal of the opportunity to obtain positive reinforcement.
