PS268 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Enkephalin, Pharmacodynamics, Drug Action
Pharmacodynamics
-pharmacodynamics includes drug action and drug effects
Drug action:
-the interaction of the drug with its receptor
Drug effects:
-the resulting behavioural, cognitive, and emotional changes produced
Nonspecific (Placebo) Effects:
-effects of drug are influenced by expectancy and experience
-good or bad “trip” on LSD is more dependent on experiences/mood of user before taking
the drug than on the amount or quality of drug taken
-nonspecific effects include anything except the chemical activity of the drug and the direct
effects of that activity
-also called placebo effects bc they can often be produced by a placebo
-a placebo is an inactive chemical that the user believes to be a drug
-placebos are substances with no active drug component and are often found to relieve
symptoms of depression and pain
-placebo effects important in treating pain and psychological depression
Document Summary
The interaction of the drug with its receptor. The resulting behavioural, cognitive, and emotional changes produced. Effects of drug are influenced by expectancy and experience. Good or bad trip on lsd is more dependent on experiences/mood of user before taking the drug than on the amount or quality of drug taken. Nonspecific effects include anything except the chemical activity of the drug and the direct effects of that activity. Also called placebo effects bc they can often be produced by a placebo. A placebo is an inactive chemical that the user believes to be a drug. Placebos are substances with no active drug component and are often found to relieve symptoms of depression and pain. Placebo effects important in treating pain and psychological depression. About 80% of the effectiveness attributed to antidepressant drugs can be obtained from a placebo. The use of placebo leads to activation of inhibitory neurons within the anterior cingulate cortex acc.
