PS268 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Xerostomia, Autonomic Nervous System, Synesthesia
The LSD Experience:
-most important effect is modification of perception
-especially strong visual images
-a present object seen in a distorted form (brighter, moving, in multiple images) and some
images can be seem with eyes open or closed, thus are hallucinogens rather than illusions
Form constants include:
-lattices
-honeycomb
-chessboard designs
-cobwebs
-tunnels
-spiral figures
-all generally combined w intense colours and brightness
-perceptual processing mechanisms might be activated at the same time as the sensory
inputs are either reduced or impaired
-these mechanisms allow perceptions of that image to come from inside brain rather than
from outside the brain
-altered sense of time, changes in perception of their own body, alterations of auditory
input
Document Summary
A present object seen in a distorted form (brighter, moving, in multiple images) and some images can be seem with eyes open or closed, thus are hallucinogens rather than illusions. All generally combined w intense colours and brightness. Perceptual processing mechanisms might be activated at the same time as the sensory inputs are either reduced or impaired. These mechanisms allow perceptions of that image to come from inside brain rather than from outside the brain. Altered sense of time, changes in perception of their own body, alterations of auditory input. Visual images might change in accordance to sounds. Enhanced emotionality due to arousal of sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system which can result in pounding heart and rapid, shallow breathing which further frightens the tripper and can lead to full blown panic reaction. Initial effects/first 20 min effects are autonomic responses like feeling dizzy, hot, cold, dry mouth.
