Document Summary

Transtheoretical model (stages of change) and substance abuse treatment. Prochaska and diclemente in 1983 proposed the transtheoretical model ttm of behaviour change which became widely viewed as guide for clinical interventions across range of health problems. Attempts to outline behavioural change by defining the tasks, steps, experiences, contexts, and main processes through which change occurs. In each phase of the change, success is associated with task accomplishment, which promotes engagement with the targets in the subsequent phase. Premise is that intentional change does not occur at a specific moment. Each person will have different experiences prior to and during their change processes and these experiences will affect the time it takes to move through them. 4 components: stage, processes, context, signs of change. The signs of change have objective and subjective aspects. Movements through stages are cyclical; people move in and out of earlier or later stages until achieving behavioural consistency and stability.
