PS268 Chapter Notes - Chapter 18: Twelve-Step Program, Narcotics Anonymous, Family Therapy
Document Summary
Treatment and rehabilitation: the big picture in canada. The delivery of prevention/treatment services for substance disorders is primarily the responsibility of canada"s provinces and territories. In 1990s, canada"s health care system underwent a dramatic transformation in which health care services gave greater priority to broad socioeconomic factors when determining the health of populations. Funds for treatment of substance disorders are obtained from local taxes, provincial/territorial health insurance programs, and federal transfers under the canada. Federal government provides direct funding for treatment and rehab of members of on reserve first nations, rcmp, armed forces members, inmates, persons who have not lives in a province long enough to receive insured health services. Substance related disorders are chronic illnesses and share characteristics of other chronic illnesses. There are no reliable cures and conditions may require continuing care throughout life. In general, however, people who go into treatment fare better than those who do not.
