PS270 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Homicide
Document Summary
Concept of catharsis usually credited to aristotle who said we can purge emotions by experiencing them. Catharsis hypothesis extended to include emotional release obtained not only by observing drama but through recalling and reliving past events, though expressing emotions, and through our actions. If viewing erotica provides outlet for sexual impulses people should experience diminished desire afterward, men should be less likely to rape etc but this is not true. Venting to reduce anger is like using gasoline to put out a fire . Doing nothing at all more effectively reduces aggression than blowing off steam though hitting a bag. Retaliation in the short run reduces tension and even provides pleasure but in the long run it fuels more negative feelings. However silent sulking is hardly more effective as it allows us to continue reciting our grievances as we conduct conversations in our head. Those who ruminate in their anger remain upset.
