Chapter 13: development of the self & social cognition. Social cognition: thinking that people display about the thoughts, feelings, motives and behaviors of themselves and other people. That helps us locate the position of our body (or parts) in space. Personal agency: recognition that one can be the cause of an event. Starts at around 2-3 months: pleasurable acts on own body occur (thumb sucking) illustrates learning of physical capabilities. I am a looker, a grabber, a chewer, who can make things happen . Self- recognition: ability to recognize oneself (can occur in mirror, picture) Match self movements in mirror to movements they are doing allows one to be aware of one"s emotions. Self-concept: one"s perceptions of one"s unique attributes/ traits (who i am) 18-24 months depends on self-differentiation, must know that they are different from objects surrounding. Present self: unaware that past self-representations or self-relevant events have implications for the present.
