PS276 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Peer Pressure, Participant Observation, Preppy
Document Summary
Sharp increase in time spent with peers vs adults. Dramatic drop in time spent w parents; for boys its mainly replaced by time spent alone, for girls its time alone and with friends. Decline most prevalent among white girls than boys or black youth. Adolescent peer groups less sex segregated and are larger groups. Different crowds (brains, jocks, etc) develop their own minicultures. Cliques are groups of between 2-12 individuals (average 5/6) generally of same sex and age defined by common activities or simply by friendship. Cliques provide main social context in which adolescents interact w each other. Clique members: have most of their interactions with same small group. Liasons: individuals who interact w two or more adolescents who are members of cliques but who themselves are not part of. Isolates: few or no links to others in the network. Fewer than half the adolescents in any school were members of cliques.
