Rates of occasional, usually harmless, experimentation far exceed rates of enduring problems. Most teens with recurrent problems with the law had problems at home and at school from early age. 1/3 of teens report having had anxiety disorder by 18. But almost all of them had developed it before turning 12. Individuals for whom problem behaviour persists into adulthood likely to have had a problematic childhood as well as problematic adolescence. Anxiety disorders and behavioural disorders typically begin during childhood. Mood disorders and substance abuse first appear during adolescence. Hormonal changes of puberty have only modest effect on adolescent behaviour. Depression is the most common psychological disturbance among adolescents. 30% of high school kids feel so sad and hopeless they often stop engaging in usual activities. About 8% of american teens meet dsm diagnostic criteria for depressive disorder. Cognitive changes permit introspection and rumination that often accompany depression. Significant decline in positive mood over adolescent years.
