PS280 Chapter 4: Cognitive-Behavioural Assessment
Document Summary
Thoughts that precede, accompany, and follow maladaptive behaviour are sometimes very important to a clinician"s understanding of an individual. Dysfunctional attitudes scale and the automatic thoughts questionnaire are both commonly used, short, easily administered questionnaires that assess thought patterns related to development and maintenance of mental disorders. There has been criticism regarding over-reliance on questionnaires and thus technological advances now ask patients to record their ongoing thoughts on smartphone appls. Real time assessements of people"s thoughts can provide useful sample of how people are processing events in their daily lives. Because cbt emphasizes modification of unhelpful automatic thoughts / dysfunctional attitudes, the measurement of cognition is an important component of outcome assessment in this modality of treatment. Patients are asked to note frequency w which they perform various acts, and sometimes the circumstances surrounding these occurrences and their response to them. Also used w less overt behaviour such as thoughts and feelings.
