Super-ego: internalized cultural or ethical expectations from society. Freud and religion: raised jewish but grew to hate it and the culture became atheist. First work on religion based on obsessive ceremonies of neurotics and religious rituals. "bed ceremonial" underscores that making bed rituals are like sacred or religious acts: they both, 1) produce anxiety and guilt if not performed, 2) carried out in isolation and cannot be interrupted, 3) done with incredible detail. Felt like religion was based on the repression of instinctual impulses.
