Argued god was responsible for the emergence of society and environment, and granted certain rights to people. Viewed emergence of state as being about preserving individual rights, not preventing war. Suggested that people had never existed outside, or without society, and were defined/created by society. Agreed with montesquieu that humans did exist within a state of nature, people were presocial.
