Document Summary

Large scale mutations: duplications, inversions, deletions, translocations. All can result in chromosomal abnormalities & reduced fertility: duplication. If duplication is directly next to its original sequence its called a tandem duplication. If duplication is somewhere else other than sequence what it duplicated fro(cid:373) it"s called displace(cid:373)e(cid:374)t duplicatio(cid:374: deletion. Chro(cid:373)oso(cid:373)es are (cid:374)ot ho(cid:373)ologous with it"s origi(cid:374)al. Results in mistakes during recombination- unequal crossing over. Duplication and deletion often occur together; one chromosome has the deletion other other homolog has the duplication. If duplication or deletion is large enough, it can be seen in the karyotype. If small, then need to look at dna sequence. Deletions occur with deletion or duplicated chromosomes, where the extra sequences of chromosomes that have been duplicated loop out so that it can pair with its homologus during meiosis 1. Can generate gametes different in gene copy number. Duplications in both homologs can result in problems as well.
