Chapter 5 (exclude 5. 7) - cell membrane & signalling. Plasma membrane: the outer limit of the cytoplasm responsible for substances moving in and out of the cell. Selectively permeable barrier -uptake of nutrition, and elimination of waste - maintaining a protected environment for cellular process to occur. Fluid mosaic model (our current understanding of membrane structure): the model proposing that the membrane consists of a fluid phospholipid bilayer in which proteins are embedded and float freely. Membranes are not rigid structures with molecules stuck in place, rather proteins are able to move around within a mixture similar to olive oil. Lipid molecules of the bilayer (double layer) can vibrate, flex back and forth, spin around, exchange places within the same half bilayer. Mosaic refers to the assortment of proteins the membrane contains. Proteins are larger and move slower than lipids. Some proteins are attachment proteins, transportation proteins, some membrane proteins anchor the cytoskeleton.
