Umbo swollen region on shell, dorsal (growth rings around it: shorter side anterior; opposite (with siphons open) posterior, periostracum (outermost, horny), prismatic , nacreous (mother-of-pearl layer, inner) Mantle layer of body wall lining the shell: @ posterior, edge modified ventral inhalant siphon & dorsal exhalant siphon. Sheet-like gills, triangular labial palps (around slit-like mouth) Auricles delicate triangular pouches, collect blood & pass to ventricle. Rectum passes through heart (mouth just back of adductor) To lab manual: siphon posterior of animal, foot 5 pairs of arms; equal length, 2 rows of suckers. Arms hold prey close to mouth (may too catch) 5th pair (males) pass spermatophore to female: one pair tentacles longer, & suckers only @ tip. Pigm ent cells numerous dark spots contract/expand rapid bleaching/darkening.
