Canadian penalty (more liberal welfare penal pracices have been replaced and that those which existed previously were preferable to more puniive developments) The deiniion of puniiveness as it exists within the penal-turn literature is too narrow meaning that the understudied is how welfare pracices, which coninue to exist, have evolved and are central to canadian penalty. Prisons in canada are aimed at changing their prisoners but the pracices through which these transformaions are meant to take place, are diferent. Therapy is not the anithesis (opposite) of puniiveness because therapeuic pracices and discourses are also puniive. Canada"s incarceraion rates are closer to those of other western naions. Punishment in canada operates under diferent pracices and policies than those suggested through the puniive turn thesis.
