Phone modem: pay your isp a monthly fee for the right to for the right to call one of several computers that are connected to the internet. There, data is transferred via the internet backbone. Dsl: use a digital signal on a regular phone line; must be near the central office. Cable modem: data is transferred on the same line that your cable tv signals come in on. Router: a network device that directs a packet between networks toward its final destination.
