Document Summary

A major point in the history of computing was the realization that data and instructions to manipulate the data were logically the same and could be stored in the same place. The computer design built upon this principle which became known as the von neumann architecture. Another major characteristic of the von newmann architecture is that the units that process info are separate from the units that store info. Arithmetic/logic unit together into bytes (8 bits) and these bytes are in turn grouped together into words. Each storage unit called a bit is capable of holding a 1 or 0; these bits are grouped. Memory is a collection of cells, each with a unique physical address. Addressability: the number of bits stored in each addressable location in memory. Arithmetic/logic unit (alu): the computer component that performs arithmetic operations (adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying) and logical operations. It is also capable of performing logical operations such as and, or and not.
