Sport changed during the last century from a set of bodily practices shaped by rhetorical claims of escape from the drudgery of work to a central institution in the spread of global entertainment and leisure industries. Sport can be useful for thinking about teaching the history of the 20th century. How tiger woods came to possess such a complicated body also helps illustrate the very complex migrations and movements of human bodies around the globe that marked 20th century life. Early 20th century idea that sports was a leisure time activity to be indulged outside the earnest hours of the industrial workday. Bodily actives of paid labourers were in explicit opposition to the leisure, unpaid and thus amateur activities of the privileged elite.
