Document Summary
Summary #7: researching health- knowledge paradigms, methodologies, and. Methods (chapter 5: key points from summary. This chapter talked about how research and inquiry in health studies is derived from an array of knowledgeable areas such as positivism, idealism and realism. These paradigms are what ultimately shape what issues are associated, the methods that can be used to carry out the inquiry and finally, the actual methods as to how the inquiry was utilized. The first approach that was discussed was positivism, which is the most dominant approach in health studies. Positivists apply quantitative methods including experimental designs, to identify cause and effect relationships between variables. However, this approach has been neglected since it eliminates human understanding since the focus is on statistical figures more. Next, idealism provides reasoning to apply a more qualitative approach to further analyze and understand the significance of figures and how those are achieved.
