Document Summary

Chapter 3: health and healthcare: a political economy perspective. This chapter focuses on the perspectives of political economy on health and the healthcare systems. The main point in this chapter is that welfare state determines societies, families and individuals health as well how hospitals, policies, insurances and etc. function and work. This chapter proposes that neo-liberalism creates social inequalities which in turn can affect individual"s health. Furthermore, it"s argued that neo-liberalism which is also known as capitalism, does not meet human needs and ignores the need of those with lower income and the poor. Also, capitalism ignores collective benefits and tries privatizing everything. Clearly, in chapter 3, it is argued that neo-liberalism affects societies, healthcare system, and health negatively. It claims to ensure/produce economic growth, which in turn is good for human welling being, however this is untrue, as it only provides well being for those with higher socio- economic status, which are known as the owners/bourgeoisies.
