Chapter 2: sociological perspectives on health and health care. In this chapter of staying alive sociology is the main discussion topic. They look at many sub-topics like structural functionalism, symbolic interactionism, social constructionism, materialism, feminism, anti-racism, post-colonialism and postmodernism. Structural functionalism focuses on interrelationships between individuals and groups within society and the way in which it is structured to function in order to maintain the society as a whole. Symbolic interactionism focuses not on social institutions but on interacting individuals and the meanings they create. Some key principles would be humans acting towards things on the basis of meanings that things have for them, these meanings arise out of social interaction. Social action results from a fitting together of individual lines of actions. Materialism focuses on how society is based not on consensus but on conflict.
