A variety of judaism: different jewish groups in hasmonean period. Sadducees & pharisees: sadducces came from upper levels of society, were wealthy, were members of jewish council. They had close connections with priests in charge of temple; most were priests themselves. Responsible for the smooth running of temples & sacrificial systems. Emphasized need for jews to properly follow torah. They believed in one life: pharisees sought to apply halakhah to everyday life. They sought to understand how a jew should life in order to please god. They would hold bible study classes & understand what god intended human beings to do. Understand what ti ments to live their daily lives in accordance with torah. They practiced alms-giving prayer, fasting, believed in resurreaction & future day of judgement. Entire tanakh was sacred & worth of study. Provided answers & interpretations to things that were confusing. Established rules & intructions to helps jews observe the law.
