Document Summary
Female gonads are paired ovaries that lie in shallow depressions, one on each side of the upper pelvic cavity. Ovaries produce eggs (ova) and the female sex hormones (estrogen//progesterone) Uterine tubes (oviducts/fallopian tubes) extend from uterus to the ovaries. Have finger like projections called fimbriae that sweep over the ovaries. When an egg (ovum) bursts from ovary during ovulation it is swept into uterine tube by the combined action of fimbriae and the beating of cilia that line the uterine tube. Receives penis during sexual intercourse; serves as birth canal and as an exit for menstrual flow. An egg lives up to 6-24 hours unless fertilization occurs. Fertilization, and therefore zygote formation usually occurs in uterine tube. Developing embryo normally arrives at the uterus after several days then implantation occurs. During implantation the embryo embeds in the uterine lining which has been prepared to receive it. Uterus: thick-walled, muscular organ about the size/shape of an inverted pear.
