Approach to esimate how probable life is in our galaxy and universe. Used to esimate how many radio signals we could expect from aliens. Limited to the milky way or own galaxy. R*: # of stars formed in galaxy each year. Ne: # of planets per system capable of supporing life. Flife: fracion of planets on which life evolved. Fintell: fracion of life-bearing planets which develop intelligent life. Fciv: fracion of planets in which intelligent life is capable of interstellar communicaion. Can only esimate the number of habitable planets (nhp) As we proceed to the right of the equaion, the factors become more uncertain. Conservaive view: intelligence like our own is rare. Opimisic view: there may be many paths to technological intelligence. Convergent evoluion: tendency of organisms of diferent backgrounds that occupy similar roles to resemble on another (sharks and dolphines, human eye and snail eye) Capacity for knowledge and ability to acquire it.
