PHIL 2015 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: The Blind Spot, Communication Theory, Health Professional
Document Summary
It is essential for health care professionals to understand the interplay between human psychology and interpersonal communication. As we have seen in the previous chapters, psychology determines a great deal of how communication is sent and received, and in term, communication shapes beliefs, behaviours and attitudes. In this chapter, we will review foundational psychological theories in order to provide you with a more robust understanding of how to communicate more effectively, particularly in difficult situations. One of the most important theories in psychology and communication theory is the johari window. This theory provides important insights into the nature of human consciousness, but also provides practical strategies for health care professionals to more effectively connect and communicate with patients. It also helps us to better understand a term that is frequently used by health care professionals but sometimes difficult to actually describe or apply: empathy. The johari window is an example of a psychological model that intersects with communication theory.
