Document Summary
Module 32: genetic & environmental influences on intelligence. Identical twins intelligence scores: extremely similar, differing with fraternal twins who only share half of their genes. Heritability: a trait among individuals that we can attribute to genes. Identical twins" scans: show same brain activity whilst doing mental tasks and similar grey/white matter associated with intelligence. Polygenetic: intelligence is polygenetic, involving many genes, not a speci c gene. However, researchers nd that a gene variation to a slightly bigger brain is the most modest predictor of intelligence. Environmental differences: more predictive of intelligence scores. Adoption from poverty to middle class homes increase intelligence. Virtual twins with the same age also have a similar intelligence due to shared environment. Biological/adoptive parents: with age, adoptive children grow apart from mental abilities of their adoptive parents and become more like their biological parents. Poor environmental conditions can depress cognitive development. Poverty level children schools = less quali ed teachers = lower achievement scores.
