Document Summary
Central nervous system (communication system) brain and spine. The brain is divided into 3 major regions: the hindbrain, the midbrain, and the forebrain (pg 89) The hindbrain: includes the cerebellum and the two structures medulla and the pons, located in the lower part of the brain stem. Medulla: attaches to the spinal cord, in charge of vital functions including circulating blood, breathing, maintaining muscle tone and reflexes like sneezing. Pons (the bridge): a bridge of fibres that connects the brain stem with the cerebellum. Contains clusters of cell bodies involved with sleep and arousal. Cerebellum (little brain): a large, deeply folded structure located next to the back surface of the brainstem. Critical to the coordination of more complex movement and sense of physical balance. The midbrain: the segment of the brainstem that lies between the hindbrain and forebrain. Contributes to the coordination of sensory processes like vision and hearing. Reticular formation runs through mid and hindbrain, contributing to arousal.
