Biopsychosocial model - a model that holds that physical illness is caused by a complex interaction of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Does not suggest that biological factors are unimportant. Health psychology - the subfield of psychology concerned with how psychosocial factors relate to the promotion and maintenance of health and with the causation, prevention and treatment of illness. Stress - any circumstances that threaten or are perceived to threaten one"s well being and that thereby tax one"s coping abilities. Routine hassles may have significant harmful effects on mental and physical health. Appraisal: stress lies in the eye of the beholder. Events that are stressful for one person may be a routine for another. Primary appraisal - initial evaluation of whether an event is irrelevant to you or relevant but not threatening to you or stressful. Secondary appraisal - evaluation of your coping resources and options for dealing with stress.
