Structure of consciousness: conscious awareness of yourself and your environment, conscious controlled, sequential, preconscious easily retrieved ex. Stored knowledge: subconscious simultaneous, automatic processing of sights, sounds, sensations, freud"s unconscious repressed memories, impulses difficult to retrieve; accessible in dreams, non-conscious physiological processes not available to awareness can be influenced through conscious intent. Circadian rhythms 24-hour biological cycles found in humans and many other species: circadian rhythms persist even when external time cues eliminated, exposure to light resets biological clock, clock adjusted by light. Receptors in the retina send input to hypothalamus. You can accumulate sleep debt and its paid for with extra sleep. Melatonin can reduce effects of jet lag by helping travelers resynchronize their biological clocks. Emg (electromyograph) records muscular activity and tension. Longer in the first part of the night. Usually within the first 2 hours of sleep. Gets progressively longer in later part of the night.
