Document Summary
Psychology (latin) = psyche (soul) + logos (study of) Psychology is as old as the human race. Aristotle, plato, and socrates considered and debated many relevant subjects to psychology such as separation of the mind and body, nativism and empiricism. Plato and aristotle were in disagreement over nature vs nurture. Aristotle people are born with a blank slate and not born with knowledge. Plato people have all their knowledge present at birth. Aristotle: theory of memory consisted of three principals: similarity, contrast, contiguity. Ren descartes (philosopher) argued the dualism of the mind and body. Processes and functions such as memory, perception, dreaming and emotions are properties of the body and understood in naturalistic terms. William harvey: demonstration that blood circulation was a function of the operation of the heart. A new science is born: the contributions of wundt and hall. German professor wilhelm wundt mounted a campaign to separate psychology from physiology and philosophy.
