Chapter 5 variations in consciousness: the nature of consciousness, consciousness is the awareness of internal and external stimuli, consciousness is fluid. It"s constantly changing as your thoughts zigzag back and forth in all sorts of directions. Even during sleep, consciousness is always changing: variations in awareness and control, while attention and consciousness are closely related, they are not identical. Light sleep: delta waves (less than 4 cps, deep sleep, this correlation between mental states and brain activity does not imply that one causes the other, biological rhythms and sleep, biological rhythms are periodic fluctuations in physiological functioning. In humans, circadian rhythms mainly influence the regulation of sleep. This optimal time of day varies from person to person: the day-night cycle also seems to be able to affect sleep and circadian rhythms. When exposed to light, some retinal cells send direct inputs to the hypothalamus which then sends signals to the pineal gland to decrease melatonin production.
