We conform to avoid rejection or to gain social approval. We are sensitive to social norms understood rules for accepted and expected behavior because the price we pay for being different can be severe. At other time we conform because we want to be accurate. When we accept others" opinions about reality, we are responding to informational social influence one"s willingness to accept others" opinions about reality. Milgram"s use of deception and stress triggered a debate over his research ethics. After the participants learned of the deception, and research purposes, virtually none regretted taking part.
