PSYC 2020 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Standard Deviation, Xm Satellite Radio
Document Summary
The purpose of z-scores or standard scores is to identify and describe the exact location of each score in a distribution. The purpose of the preceding example is to demonstrate that a score by itself does not necessarily provide much information about its position within a distribution. The original, unchanged scores that are the direct result of measurement are called raw scores. A second purpose of z scores is to standardize an entire distribution. In summary, the process of transforming x values into z scores serves two useful purposes: Each z score tells the exact location of the original x value within the distribution. The z scores from a standard distribution that an be directly compared to other distributions that also have been transformed into z scores. One of the primary purposes of a z score is to describe the exact location of a score within a distribution.
