PSYC 2030 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Teddy Bear, Heart Rate, Behaviorism
Document Summary
Four major research methods in psychology: a) experimental, b) quasi-experimental, d) case study, survey. Psychological measurement: psychologists are interested in mental states and processes which can never be directly observed or measured (i. e. you cannot touch or see a mood, thought, disposition, memory, attitude, etc. ) And you can only observe things that are associated w/ these phenomena: however this does not mean the phenomena themselves are any less real. This difficulty of observing phenomena also exists in other sciences (i. e. astronomy and chemistry) but it has been addressed by making relevant technological advances. There are technological advances in psychology as well (i. e. monitoring blood flow, measuring reaction times, non-conscious responses, etc. ) Proponents of this view include j. b. watson and b. f. skinner. Psychological tests: measurement procedures used to ide(cid:374)tif(cid:455) a pe(cid:396)so(cid:374)(cid:859)s (cid:373)e(cid:374)tal state (cid:396)elati(cid:448)e to othe(cid:396) people (o(cid:396) population norms) usually involve large numbers of questions or tasks and test reliability and validity are established through extensive research.
