PSYC 2030 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Murder Of Kitty Genovese, Truism, Randomized Experiment
Document Summary
Chapter 2 from hunches to testable hypotheses. Discussion section of research reports are good place to get research lead. Journals/ books that publish detailed reviews of research on certain topics are good source also of promising leads (especially reviews) Important that you take careful notes so that when writing proposal you are able to give credit to source. The idea of a cycle of discovery and justification is also reminder that end of one study can lead to another. When experimenting researchers want to maximize their own confidence that one variable is cause of an outcome so will often turn to special case of studying relationships (randomized experiments) No effective alternative treatment available to compare = usually use the control as the placebo. More systematic way of thinking about how and where hunches/ questions/ insights come from is hypothesis- generating heuristics; this refers to strategies and circumstances that can lead to testable hypotheses.
