Presence of others can have positive or negative influence on person"s behaviour. Social facilitation: when people do better on a task in the presence of others than when they"re alone. Social inhibition: when people do worse on a task in the presence of others than when they"re alone. Robert zajonc, mere presence of others increases physiological arousal, this arousal enhances whatever a person"s dominant tendency is on a particular task. Other people believe social facilitation is caused by people"s concern about being evaluated by the audience. Presence of other people is distracting even when not evaluating our performance, decreasing our ability to focus.
