Psychological problems of elderly people fall into 2 groups: Disorders that may be common in people of all ages but are connected to the process of aging e. g. depressive, anxiety and substance use disorders. Disorders of cognition that result from brain abnormalities e. g. delirium, mild and major neurocognitive disorders. One of the most common mental health problems of older adults and may be helped by cognitive-behaviour, interpersonal therapy, antidepressant medications or a combination. Many things about aging increase anxiety e. g. declining health. Older adults are treated with cognitive-behaviour therapy and antianxiety medications. Alcohol abuse and other issues decline after age 60. Leading substance abuse is the misuse of prescription drugs. Higher rate of psychotic symptoms than younger people usually due to underlying medical conditions e. g. delirium, dementia, schizophrenia etc. Schizophrenia is less common in older people and their symptoms lessen later in life.
