83 views10 pages

Document Summary

Anxiety: negative mood state characterized by bodily symptoms of physical tension, and apprehension about the future. Advantage of anxiety - physical and intellectual performance is enhanced by anxiety. People experiencing anxiety often know their concerns are trivial but still cannot control the feeling or stop feeling it. Fear: immediate alarm reaction to danger which focuses on the present, rather than anxiety which is more future-oriented [it is usually associated with activation of the sympathetic nervous system] The panic attacks might be expected/cued since there is anticipation about what type of situation induces fear, or uncued attacks when it is not expected what will trigger the event. Fear and panic are expected suddenly and the physiological symptoms are monitored via monitoring: muscle tension, finger temperature and heart rate. The limbic system is the main integrating centre between the higher cortical processes and the brain stem.
