Problems in intimate relationships is the leading reason americans seek counselling. Many people o er di erent advise about relationships, all con icting with one another. Science needs a system for evaluating claims about how relationships work, and a way to determine which claims are true for most people and which are not. Relationship science- uses the scienti c method to determine which claims about relationships are true by systematically observing and identifying the claim that best describes what actually happens. Description question- what happens: helps identify the nature and scope of the problems being studied. Prediction question- when does it happen: whether knowing something about a relationship at one point in time can predict what the relationship will be like at some future time. Explanation question- why does it happen: points out ways that relationships reach the predicted outcomes and methods of changing or improving them.
