Psyc 3170 chapter 14: psychoneuroimmunology, aids, cancer, arthritis. Interactions between behavioural, neuroendocrine and immunological processes of adaptation. Can assess immunocompetence (immune function) via measuring # of diff immune cells in blood (nk, t, b cells) or assessing their functioning (activation, proliferation, transformation, cytotoxicity) mitogenic technique: chemical stimulation should demonstrate proliferation in response to mitogen. If body is producing antibodies for latent viruses means immune system not working well enough to control them: ability to produce antibodies to vaccine = good functioning (stress/drug use compromises ability to make antibodies) Immunocompromise = when immune functioning is below normal level: can examine wound healing heal faster when immune system is functioning more vigorously. Different stressors create different demands on body, humans evolved so that immune response can occur quickly when encountering sudden stress (ex. fight/light response elicit immune response wrt potential injury). Short-term stressor (ex. being called on to do math problem) increased nk cells and granular lymphocytes.
