2 different types of bilingualism: simultaneous bilingualism when children acquire two languages at the same time. Usually occurs when children are born into a community that is bilingual. Also occurs when a child is exposed to a family that speaks two languages at home: sequential bilingualism occurs when an individual acquires a second language after already acquiring a native language. Can occur when child is exposed to one language at home and another at school. Young children are considered to be able to effortlessly acquire two or more languages simultaneously. Course of development: de houwer (1990) says simultaneous bilingual acquisition is children being exposed to two languages on a regular basis (hearing both everyday) Acquisition of two languages by 3 years of age. Concludes that development is very similar, with regard to syntax it is the same in both languages as it is in monolingual children"s acquisition of respective language.
