Chapter 6 gender comparisons in social and personality characteristics. Remember: gender similarities common when dealing with cognitive abilities and achievement. Chapter will discuss communication patterns, characteristics related to helping/ caring, and aggression and power: using social constructionist approach. Males more likely to make heroic rescues but overall diffs for helping not large. Social constructionist approach we construct or invent our own versions of reality based on prior expectations, social interactions, and beliefs; often focuses on language as mechanism for categorizing our experiences. Culture provides us with schemas and other info. 5 cautions of research on gender comparisons important for personality and social characteristics. Social setting important when considering personality/ social characteristics; is big source of info that people examine to make sense of the world. If social setting has important influence on whether people act gender- stereotypically, then a characteristic (nurturing)is not an inevitable/ expected component of all females. Men and women can have a lot of similarity.
