Psychological disorders the range of behaviors and experiences that fall outside of social norms, create adaptational difficulty for the individual daily, and put the individual or others at risk of harm. Dsm reference used by mental health professionals to diagnose people with psychological disorders. International statistical classification of disease and related health problems (icd) used in other countries, similar to dsm, but used also for medical illnesses. Women are 70% more likely than men to experience mdd: men are more likely to have depressive symptoms between ages 60-80. Adults 59 years or younger are ~twice as likely to experience mdd (or have experienced) Symptoms less likely to be seen in older adults: dysphoria, guilt, low self-esteem, and suicidal thoughts. It is harder to diagnose older adults with depression due to several factors: misdiagnosing other illnesses, failure for older adults to report, avoiding stigmatizing older clients, financial issues for older adults or long waits to receive treatment.
