It is the involvement in any organized activity in which unpaid individuals participate in order to achieve a common goal. Root method of change is the belief that people can and should collaborate to solve problems. Grassroots activism: when individuals define their own issues and press for social change to address these issues and work in a bottom up fashion. Self help groups: individuals woth common issues come together and assist a and emotionally help eachother. Ceasefire: successfully brought down mass shootings in many cities. Helplessness: belief that one cannot change society. Activists: identify with the group that they are associated with. Must be viewed as an activist to make change. Development of power for organizations and for individuals go together (change in one can mean change in the other) 4 phases to community organizing: assessment. Public events demonstrate organizational or citizen power and attracts attention: reflection. Efectiveness of action, discussion of lessons learned etc is discussed.
